Chapter 18

Jerry kicked at the snow. The light was almost gone. He’d been all over this goddamn road. His feet were freezing. He swore. This was her fault. He wouldn’t even be here if it wasn’t for her. He stomped farther into the trees. He’d been so furious that night, he couldn’t remember exactly where he’d left her.

He kept searching, but it didn’t matter. She was gone. The shadows grew deeper and the wind picked up. Icy blasts went right through him, chilling him to his bones. The branches of the trees rubbed together, creaking ominously. A little shiver ran down his back. It was like she’d just disappeared. Goddammit! He wanted to punch something.

A sharp crack made him jump.

Shit! What the hell was that?

He looked around wildly. Then he heard it again. Just a branch snapping in the wind. He should get out of here. Those things were dangerous. It was getting too dark to see anyway. He stomped back to his truck.

Jerry drove back along the dirt road, taking the turn too fast. That fucking cunt. Even dead, she still defied him. His phone rang and he snatched it up.

“What!”

“Jerry, it’s Ben. Where the fuck are you? Did you get my message?”

Shit. Ben. “Oh, hey Ben. No. Must have missed your call. What’s up?”

“Jerry, they’re looking for you. Some cop from upstate New York called the station. Said you were wanted for questioning about a break-in up there.”

“What the fuck are you talking about?”

“Jerry, Mari’s accusing you of breaking into her apartment. What the fuck is going on?”

“That’s crazy—” Wait a minute. “Mari said that?”

“Yeah. Apparently, she told her boss at some grocery store that you’ve been harassing her. Trashed her apartment. The guy reported it to the police. They called down here to see if we had any information. On you. The only reason there isn’t an arrest out is because Mari hasn’t made a statement. You want to tell me what the fuck is going on?”

Jerry was silent a moment. “She said I broke into her apartment?” He had no trouble sounding incredulous. She had to come back from the dead to do that. Unless—

“Son-of-a-bitch!” She was alive. No wonder he couldn’t find the body. He pulled over.

“Jerry—”

Jerry blew out a breath, thinking fast. “Listen, Ben. I don’t know what she’s talking about. We split up a few months ago.” He blew out another breath. “Accused me of cheating and left. I think—” he paused for effect. “I think she met someone. I haven’t seen her since.”

There was a long silence. “Where are you?” Ben didn’t sound convinced. No surprise there. It was pretty lame.

“Fishing. I took some time and rented a cabin out on Lake Wateree.”

“I’ll meet you. Give me the address.”

“No, Ben. Thanks. I need to be alone right now. I thought— well, you know. I thought we were going to be together…” He made his voice sad, resigned. “Maybe she’ll come back. I don’t know. I never cheated, Ben. I swear.” The truth rang in his voice.
