Chapter 18
Jerry kicked at the snow. The light was almost gone. Heâd been all over this goddamn road. His feet were freezing. He swore. This was her fault. He wouldnât even be here if it wasnât for her. He stomped farther into the trees. Heâd been so furious that night, he couldnât remember exactly where heâd left her.
He kept searching, but it didnât matter. She was gone. The shadows grew deeper and the wind picked up. Icy blasts went right through him, chilling him to his bones. The branches of the trees rubbed together, creaking ominously. A little shiver ran down his back. It was like sheâd just disappeared. Goddammit! He wanted to punch something.
A sharp crack made him jump.
Shit! What the hell was that?
He looked around wildly. Then he heard it again. Just a branch snapping in the wind. He should get out of here. Those things were dangerous. It was getting too dark to see anyway. He stomped back to his truck.
Jerry drove back along the dirt road, taking the turn too fast. That fucking cunt. Even dead, she still defied him. His phone rang and he snatched it up.
âWhat!â
âJerry, itâs Ben. Where the fuck are you? Did you get my message?â
Shit. Ben. âOh, hey Ben. No. Must have missed your call. Whatâs up?â
âJerry, theyâre looking for you. Some cop from upstate New York called the station. Said you were wanted for questioning about a break-in up there.â
âWhat the fuck are you talking about?â
âJerry, Mariâs accusing you of breaking into her apartment. What the fuck is going on?â
âThatâs crazyââ Wait a minute. âMari said that?â
âYeah. Apparently, she told her boss at some grocery store that youâve been harassing her. Trashed her apartment. The guy reported it to the police. They called down here to see if we had any information. On you. The only reason there isnât an arrest out is because Mari hasnât made a statement. You want to tell me what the fuck is going on?â
Jerry was silent a moment. âShe said I broke into her apartment?â He had no trouble sounding incredulous. She had to come back from the dead to do that. Unlessâ
âSon-of-a-bitch!â She was alive. No wonder he couldnât find the body. He pulled over.
âJerryââ
Jerry blew out a breath, thinking fast. âListen, Ben. I donât know what sheâs talking about. We split up a few months ago.â He blew out another breath. âAccused me of cheating and left. I thinkââ he paused for effect. âI think she met someone. I havenât seen her since.â
There was a long silence. âWhere are you?â Ben didnât sound convinced. No surprise there. It was pretty lame.
âFishing. I took some time and rented a cabin out on Lake Wateree.â
âIâll meet you. Give me the address.â
âNo, Ben. Thanks. I need to be alone right now. I thoughtâ well, you know. I thought we were going to be togetherâ¦â He made his voice sad, resigned. âMaybe sheâll come back. I donât know. I never cheated, Ben. I swear.â The truth rang in his voice.
